5TH COHORT OF UPNG LAW STUDENTS COMPLETE TRANSPARENCY INTERNATIONAL PNG LEGAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Three students from the University of PNG (UPNG) Law School have now successfully completed the 2021-2022 Transparency International PNG (TIPNG) Legal Internship Program (LIP).

Facilitated under an official five-year Memorandum of Understanding between TIPNG and the UPNG Law School, fourth year law students Andrea Maru, Jasmine Murray, and Lloyd Kombe officially concluded their internship with TIPNG yesterday (1/3/2022) as they prepare to join the rest of their final year classmates.

Now in its fifth iteration, the TIPNG LIP Program has been designed and facilitated as part of the TIPNG Anti- Corruption Help Desk (AnCoHD) Program, which offers free information and assistance to victims and witnesses of corruption in PNG. Over the course of their 13-week internship, the three interns had the opportunity to interview victims and witnesses of corruption, collect corruption complaints, updating the TIPNG SalesForce database, and preparing case files for review and referral.

In addition to assisting the functions of the AnCoHD program, Andrea, Jasmin, and Lloyd were also engaged in the supporting other TIPNG programs through the analysis and preparation of legal briefs and the updating of the TIPNG 50+1 Cases index of unresolved governance issues in PNG.

“We are grateful and proud of our ongoing partnership with the UPNG, which has facilitated this program over the past five years. While the LIP offers law students the opportunity to experience proactive approaches to combating corruption in our community, it also gives them a live environment, and different scenarios in which to apply and adapt the legal knowledge and practices that they have learnt in Law School,” said TIPNG Chief Executive Officer, Arianne Kassman.

“We are proud of our interns and the capabilities and potential that their have demonstrated over their short 13- week stint with us. Particularly their ability to adapt to the different challenges that were put in front of them, and creating outputs that supported the mission and vision of TIPNG,” she said.

With the official close of the fifth annual TPNG Legal Internship Program yesterday, TIPNG has now scheduled recruitment of its sixth batch of interns by November 28th, 2022.
