The provision of timely, accurate and accessible information during the polling period will be critical to ensuring a democratically credible 2022 National General Election, says Transparency International Papua New Guinea (TIPNG). The delivery of the election has faced multiple administrative, legal and logistical challenges and it is now incumbent on the Papua New Guinea Electoral Commission (PNGEC) and partners to ensure clear and consistent communication to voters, says TIPNG.

Transparency International Papua New Guinea (TIPNG) is sounding the alarm on the risk of an inadvertent breach of both the election laws and the Constitutional requirements pertaining to the conduct of the 2022 National General Elections (NGE). Key information from the PNG Electoral Commission (PNGEC) has not been forthcoming inspite of several attempts made by TIPNG. Chairman Peter Aitsi said “Two weeks ago Electoral Commissioner Mr. Sinai published an announcement of the revised election schedule issued by Head of State, Governor General Sir Bob Dadai. On Friday 6th May 2022 PNGEC officials were unable to produce a gazettal notice, giving effect to this announcement.” This is a serious concern he went on to say.

Transparency International Papua New Guinea (TIPNG) is reminding all Members of Parliament to ensure that the transition from the 10th Parliament to the 11th Parliament occurs within the rule of law and upholds the Constitution. Actions by current MP’s will be subject to the Leadership Code while in office and the Organic Law on the Independent Commission Against Corruption should they leave office after the Elections. TIPNG has issued this statement following media reports that there will be no arrangement for a caretaker cabinet during the Election period commencing from the Issue of Writs on 28th April and ending with the Return of Writs on 29th July 2022.
